2016 Summer Trip: The Christopher Farm & Gardens
Located along the western shoreline of Lake Michigan is a 50 acre private botanical garden developed by owner, Jay W. Christopher. The Christopher Farm & Gardens in total is approximately 400 acres, the gem being the many themed gardens connected by a network of walking paths.
It is looking like a big week for the garden club. On Monday club members went to the home of Janet & Dale Swoboda on Angle Road in Kewaunee. At the last plant sale Janet mentioned she had some Heritage Peonies that needed thinning. Club member Anne Sinkula took the reins and coordinated a little "Gorilla Gardening" event. Anne, Tom Zenner and Barb Smith dug & potted 25 double pink Heritage Peonies along with 9 single white Heritage Peonies with yellow centers. We are calling them "Heritage" varieties as they have a lovely fragrance that is nowadays hard to find in new varieties. Any club members that have room to overwinter & get ready for the plant sale can contact Anne Sinkula or Tom Zenner as they have the bulk of the Peonies.
As soon as we have pictures we will post......
Wednesday started the Quilt Square project for Farm Tek 2017. Our mission is to paint 40 quilt squares, 8- 4x4' squares and 32- 2x2' squares. This project is being held at Heritage Farm on Highway 42 just north of Highway "j".
All of the squares have been designed. Temperatures are staying in our favor to dry the paint which helps because we have started painting the first color on all of the 4x4s.
Tomorrow from 9am to 3pm we can use all of the help we can get to tape off and continue to paint quilt squares. If you can give us an hour or two it would be greatly appreciated.
The club purchased the materials for the quilt squares with the express intention of raffling off the squares. These monies will go towards all of the programs the club supports including local scholarships.
Farm Tek is supporting ALL agriculture in Kewaunee County. They have tapped the Wineries, Apple growers, Alpaca owners, Brewers, Charter Fishers, and many more I'm sure I missed. This is an opportunity to bring in much needed revenue to the county. Kewaunee County is one of the smallest counties hosting Farm Tek but we have the best volunteers in the state!!!!
Thank You one and all.
