The lesson I have thoroughly learnt, and wish to pass on to others, is to know the enduring happiness that the love of a garden gives.   Gertrude Jekyll

One of the healthiest ways to gamble is with a spade and a package of garden seeds.

Leaf Making with Portland Cement

Materials Needed

Play sand

Cement Bonding agent

Cement coloring

Water

Heavy Duty Saran Wrap

Disposable Gloves

Leaves (such as Large Hosta)

Tools Needed

Container to mix in

Trowel

Level working surface

Files

Cement sealer – optional

Measuring container

On a level surface, place dampened play sand. (dampened to beach sculpting consistency)

Shape sand mound to fit leaf.

Cover with saran wrap.

Place leaf top side down (vein side up)

Mix Cement

Measure equal parts of Portland cement and silica sand into mixing container.

Add cement bonding agent; approximately ¼ - 3/8 cup per quart of cement and sand mix.

Mix together.

Add cement coloring

Add water (a little at a time)

Continue mixing with trowel until consistency will hold it’s shape and not “run”.

Using trowel or gloved hands, place a small amount of cement mixture in center of leaf.

Work cement from the center to edges of leaf, being careful not to extend cement beyond edge of the leaf.

Try to keep the center of the vein the thickest and taper cement to the edges.

The thickest area should be approximately ¼ inch to ½ inch depending on leaf being sculpted.

Cover with saran wrap.

Let set for 36 to 72 hours depending on humidity levels.

When dry, carefully remove from the sand mound.

Gently file up to the edges of leaf, tapering and rounding for a genuine effect.

Peel leaf from cement sculpture.
